Know the why
Have you suffered from depression? You are not alone. Statistics say that "depression affects approximately 19 million Americans or 9.5% of the population in any given one-year period." It is wise to have a mental health professional who understands this affliction.
Researchers state that depression affects so many people that it is often referred to as the "common cold" of mental illness, and could be a reason the depths of depression aren't fully explored, with a blanket treatment extended to many sufferers.
My suggestion is to discover the root cause of your depression — something hidden needs to come to light. You may or may not know the source or cause of your depression, which can range from nutritional factors, hormonal issues, or spiritual dilemmas to emotional heartaches and could be from one or a combination of sources.
It's always good practice to be thoroughly checked by a physician for possible biochemical problems or other sensitivities such as improper thyroid functioning. After a full physical workup is completed, it's time to look at other possible reasons for your depression.
Your therapist should be willing to shepherd you calmly and safely through all the stages of your journey, the troubled territory of past hurt, present fears, resentments, and impulses.
Your therapist should be available to supportively walk with you through the healing journey, where unpleasant, necessary challenges may be revealed as you courageously allow problems to come to the forefront of your understanding. Uncovering the reason for your depression is a process for which you have control of the pace. Don't resist because it seems daunting, with persistence; you can find healing.
