fitting in

Feeling accepted and finding your group of friends is usually the biggest struggle for teens. Questions like, "how can I fit in, where do I fit in," or "who are my friends" are common.  You may have found a group to hang with, but then discover that not everyone has the same opinions and believes the same way on things. That is ok and to be expected.

What takes practice is learning how to disagree with intelligent debate. Your friends can become your practice group for healthy disagreement. Just remember a few simple rules to have a healthy discourse.

1.  Listen well to the opposition to understand that person's point of reference.

2. Be respectful, even if you disagree.

3. Understand your perspective and share it with valid points.

4. Try to end on a note of peace even if you agree to disagree on the topic.

5.  Learn to challenge and debate without anger and arrogance.

6. Use differences to help define your value system and build good character.
